What is NLP?

NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming and put simply it is the language of your mind. Where we run into problems is when our conscious mind, or our thinking mind, doesn't communicate effectively with our unconscious mind and so we don't actually get what we want. Instead of feeling amazingly confident and full of self-esteem when about to give a presentation, which is what many of us would want we instead end up with extreme anxiety, shaking hands and an upset stomach.

Our thinking, conscious mind is the part that sets our goals and puts plans into place and our unconscious mind is what goes out and gets the goals and implements the plans. Sometimes two very different outcomes and this is because we've never been taught how to communicate with our unconscious mind. We know how to set goals and find things that we want, we just don't know how to achieve them effectively.

In any case, our unconscious mind isn't out to get us. It's important to realise that our unconscious mind is only ever delivering what it thinks we want and its very good at it. We can get more anxious quite easily, we can worry and get stressed and not sleep and overeat consistently without much resistance at all and so know that once the communication problem is sorted out, your unconscious mind can be delivering your goals and desires in no time at all.

You can get what you don't want very quickly, so why not learn the language of your unconscious mind to get what you do want, instead?

NLP is the tool that can empower you with the knowledge to step into the best version of yourself and achieve the life you deserve. It's the 'manual for your brain' with a whole host of processes and techniques that can change your thoughts and mindset, truly enabling you to let go of old habits of thinking and behaving so you can show up more confident, more effective and motivated to succeed.

We all know that when we're in a good mood we tend to have a good day and see good things happen. We're uplifted and motivated but the trouble is it tends to wear off fairly quickly. To allow it to stay that way we need to control what goes into the mind. There are only two ways to feel good or bad about about anything; either remember or imagine something good happening  or remember or imagine something bad happening. That's it - it's all about the thoughts that go in in the first place as what you put in is what you get out. The good news is you can control what goes in and to do this we use NLP.

It's similar to installing new apps on your phone and deleting the old ones that no longer serve a purpose. When something doesn't work anymore you get rid of it or you upgrade it, so why not upgrade your thoughts and mindset too?

Successful people have strategies for their successful outcomes and these can be broken down and shown to someone who wishes to have the same success. A simple example is a fear of rollercoasters. Two people can be sat next to each other on the same rollercoaster, one fearful and the other excited and the same event will produce two very different experiences. Why? The rollercoaster ride itself was exactly the same for both, but the way the experience was interpreted and stored by the mind was not.

Their individual thinking about the experience created their emotions which in turn lead to their reaction or behaviour throughout the ride and by the end only serves to reinforce their already stored perceptions (memories) about that specific event.

So if one person hated rollercoasters and the other loved them, it's possible to find out the strategy for 'loving' the rides and for the person who hated them to use that strategy instead so they would no longer hate them. The fear would be gone because their own strategy would be disrupted or replaced, and a new, better strategy would run in its place.

It's different to hypnotherapy as it operates through the conscious use of language to bring about changes in thoughts and behaviour. A range of techniques can be used to bring about this change, and this is something that is always discussed with the client before proceeding.

Change can be quick and very effective using NLP and it never ceases to amaze me every time I see it in action. If you have any further questions I'd be happy to answer them, just visit the contact page to get in touch :)
